Stone masonry in Saintes

To be honest, we'd never gone to Saintes (just west of Cognac) if we hadn't been on our way to San Sebastian and were looking for a hotel.
We're very happy we stayed the night - Saintes is a lovely town and there's a lot to be seen, like beautiful churches.

We saw the church of the Abbaye aux Dames, the first Benedictine Abbey for women, consacrated in 1047 - that's pre-romanesque & deep time! The fascinating adornments strongly reminded us of Escher and there were definitely Arab patterns involved.

We saw a huge cathedral with wonderful gargoyles.
We saw a church that on photo looked very much Art Deco (not IRL!).
All this on a balmy summer evening.

We think life is good!
