America, a foodies dream?

We love the American diners.
We love to indulge in the eggs sunny side up, the hash browns / brown hashes, the ketchup, the lavishly filled omelettes (sour cream, avocado, mushrooms, tomatoes) and the stacks of pancakes covered in maple syrup.
We love the large glasses of ice cold water that are put before you as soon as you sit down.
We love to watch the people that eat there - do Americans ever breakfast at home? Diners are invariably full in the morning!
And the waitresses are terrific.

But after a while we long for food that is not either deep fried, fatty or sweet - or a combination of the three. We long for real food.

So after the first week in the desert and the diners we started to eat cheese on toast for lunch (while driving). We didn't eat out twice a day but only once. We didn't dine out but I made soup and salad in our motel room.

What we call normal food in Holland they call fine dining here, Fine Dining! And it's hard work to find a place where you can eat it.

So when we ate Chef AndrÄ—'s food in Paso Robles ('Paso Terra') we were over the moon.
That sounds pathetic, but you try starting the day on eggs + fried potatoes + melted cheese + mugs of American coffee for two weeks after which you dine on practically the same because you happen to be a vegetarian that eats fish when nothing veggie is on the menu (fish: not in the desert states in America, that is, if you don't want them deep fried).

So the foodies galore was an on-off.

Then we drove through Napa Valley. To be more precise: through Yountville.
Yountville has the most Michelin stars per capita in the world.
And when standing before Thomas Keller's three starred French Laundry, yes, that's not even foodies dream but the end of a pilgrimage.

The restaurant was closed. We knew that. We also knew about the three months waiting list.
We knew about all the famous restaurants in Yountville and Napa valley. They cost. A lot.

After three weeks in America we know how to make our own foodies feast.
Back in Holland it's all healthy food, normal portions, no supersize hot plate for breakfast, no eating out again.

We will SO miss the diners!
