50 AD people built it

And almost 2000 years later I sit on the same stone benches taking in the sheer vastness of my surroundings. Some time later I wander through the underground corridors, in awe of the metres thick walls and the several floors high ceiling.

At the end of the day, with the tourist groups leaving, we sat in the Verona Arena for I think more than an hour. It is immensely impressive. I don't think I've ever been in a building this old - 50 AD.
That's older than almost anything I know in this world.

Looking out over the vast Arena, seeing in my mind's eye the thousands of people that have sat here during the ages I felt suddenly both humble and proud.
For the first time in my life I was overwhelmed by all the centuries that had passed since the Arena was built, and at the same time felt part of all those centuries - and of mankind.
Humble and proud to be part of this world.

Rather dazed we stepped out into the bustling city. The first people we almost walked into asked us for directions to Juliet's Balcony. Ah yes. We were back again in the 21st century. Juliet's Balcony. See my next blog...
