Nottingham was the first of the industrial cities alongside the moors and dales country of the Midlands we visited. Nottingham is poor, poor as English cities can be and Dutch cities are not (and probably have never been).
Nottingham celebrated Summer, with an impromptu beach bang in the middle of the city and children romping in the city's man made ponds.
'Nottingham' is followed by 'forest'. Robin Hood. Wherever we went people pointed out the boundaties of the original forest. That is all farmland now.
We drove around and around Nottingham, trying to figure out the layout of the ciy. I wrote: Nottingham is poor. The one higher middle and upper class residential area is a gated community.
All the industrial cities in the Midlands suffered the same fate at the same time: the heavy industry (and later the mines) closed. The cities thus had to reinvent themselves. After visiting a couple of them we noted they had all reacted differently to their near bankruptcy.
